"The City of Art", "The City of Beer", "The Capital of the Movement", "A Cosmopolitan City with a Heart" and "The    Secret Capital". Over the centuries, Munich has been awarded many titles. The Bavarian capital has seen a lot in its 850-year history and was a silent witness to both glamorous and dark times.

Founded as a monks' settlement on the banks of the Isar river at 519 meters above sea level, Munich was first mentioned by name in 1158 in the "Augsburger Schied" by Emperor Friedrick I. In a dispute with the Diocese of Freising, he gave Duke Henry the Lion the right to operate a customs bridge over the Isar with the monks. In return, Henry had to transfer a third of the income to Freising.

You must know that this decision was probably preceded by a ruse from Henry the Lion. He had the episcopal bridge near Oberföhring torn down, or, as some historians believe, had it burned down, forcing the Berchtesgaden salt merchants to use a bridge further up the Isar, that was closer to his town, on their way north and west.

For a long time, Munich was overshadowed by the free imperial cities of Regensburg and Augsburg and was better known for its good-tasting beer. It was the Wittelsbach princes who first brought brilliant splendor to the city with their magnificent buildings.

Under King Ludwig I, Munich developed into an art metropolis from the middle of the 19th century. Around that time large art museums opened, which later became world famous. His successor, the fairy tale king Ludwig II left his mark on the city with extensive renovations in the residences.

In 1918, when still unknown Private Adolf Hitler came to Munich after the end of World War I, the city's dark era began, which culminated in World War II. In just a few years he and his National Socialist Workers' Party of Germany put the city under his spell and declared it the “capital of the movement”. This period also left many buildings in Munich's cityscape that can still be seen.

Today, Munich, with 1.3 million inhabitants, is the third largest city in Germany after Berlin and Hamburg and a center of culture, politics, science and media, as well as the seat of numerous corporations . In terms of quality of life, Munich ranked third among 231 major cities worldwide in 2018, according to Mercer consulting company. In the same year, “Monocle” magazine named the Bavarian capital the most livable city in the world.

Munich is the capital with traditional Bavarian roots, cozy beer atmosphere, chic café society, high apartment rental prices and cost of living, and also FC Bayern Munich and German football.
