Rome, a city rich with almost 3,000 years of history is a tourist’s dream come true. Of the many places to go and sights to see, we have selected a collection of the 18 most important and interesting landmarks and venues for you to explore.
Today we will guide you through the areas of Rome which began to thrive again starting around the Renaissance. As you know, Rome was once a magnificent empire, but it suffered and fell to ruin over time. People starved in the city, population decreased and all of its once great structures experienced looting and destruction. In the 15th century, with the years leading up to the Renaissance, Rome experienced a restoration, a second chance you could say. Due to the efforts of Pope Martin V, order was restored, instability in society was balanced, and attention and care was once again given to palaces, bridges, roads, churches and public spaces. What
your tour explores today is the growth that took place beginning in the 15th century which has continued until modern times.
Much of the art that you will find in Rome was a product of wealthy families competing against one another. In addition to the church, they were the main patrons of the arts, driving the renewal of sculpture, painting and other fine arts. The desire for these families to acquire fine art and the Pope's impulse to decorate the churches and palaces fueled the Renaissance and brought artists back to the city.
Today's tour highlights the best tourist destinations of Renaissance Rome, starting with the Palazzo Altemps. We then lead you through Piazza Navona and past the Fountain of the Four Rivers. Rome is a city filled with art from the sculptor Bernini, and on our tour you will meet his masterpieces. We will wander through Campo de’ Fiori and past the Altar of the Fatherland. We will stop at multiple churches before arriving at Triton Fountain and Trevi Fountain. A trip to Rome would be incomplete without a visit to the Spanish Piazza and Steps and we will make our way through this area before finishing the tour in one of the city’s greatest parks and art galleries, Villa Borghese.
