Exploring this neighborhood, you will catch a glimpse of real Portuguese life, as the streets are lined with peoples’ homes, grocery markets, little gardens and backyards, laundry lines hanging above, women selling fish from their windows, kids in the alleys playing soccer and people sitting outside small cafes, reading the morning newspaper or chatting with neighbors. As you stroll through this neighborhood that's maintained its personality and charm be prepared for your heart to fill with love for Alfama.
Lisbon is a city with more than 3000 years of history and Alfama is an integral part of it. Alfama is the second oldest neighborhood in Europe and throughout the years it has been able to maintain its tight community feeling, keeping residents close, both in regard to proximity and relationships. You may notice that they observe the tourists exploring their neighborhood just as much as you observe them. We hope that on today's tour you will take some time to speak with some of the residents of Alfama. This is a slow paced neighborhood and having a chat in the street will be warmly welcomed.
While Alfama is traditionally a residential area, it has come to be a sought after tourist spot due to its authenticity. Enjoy the maze of streets that make up this little village in the heart of the city. There are many stairs to climb but on the tour you will be delightfully rewarded by constant lookout points with three specifically included as sights on the tour. Today we will start at Casa dos Bicos, adventure past numerous cathedrals, head to São Jorge Castle, visit the Fado museum, make a stop at the National Pantheon, all while filling our senses exploring the small streets of the area.
Today's tour covers not only the cultural spots in the neighborhood but also some of Portuguese people's favorite foods from plates piled high with seafood, olive oil grilled octopus, the history behind salted cod, Lisbon’s signature drink, ginjinha, a cheese unique to the region, grilled piri piri chicken, caldo verde soup, various forms of sausage, fresh and canned sardines, to perhaps the most famous food associated with Lisbon, Pastel de Nata.
